I've had this friend for a while that I share an ideal kind of a friendship with. Not because we never fight or even because I enjoy talking to him. Actually, he drives me crazy. I call it ideal because I don't hold back or hide anything from him. I tell him exactly how I feel and what I think about everything in life, including his acts of stupidity. He doesn't always appreciate it at first, but the main reason we are still friends is because he knows he can get that from me when he can get it nowhere else. At any rate, one thing that we argue a lot about and that has plagued me for some time now is that he obsesses over wanting everything to be simple. If we have an argument somehow he views that as a complication instead of a simplification; difficulty instead of easy. A lot of people may disagree with me on this topic, but, as he's said himself many times as well as my ex, I'm always right. LOL Moving on from my ego...I think an argument is a simplification and actually easier because the inverse is that you let feelings and thoughts fester inside and it can be much like cancer. You may not even feel it's presence until it's too late. Sometimes, though, simplicity and ease cannot coexist. For example, it's easier to just shit in your pants rather than get up to use the restroom, but it is certainly not simple. Then you have multiplied your complications far beyond the ease of use of your underpants as a portable toilet particularly because cleaning the mess you made is sure to be far from easy.
I've been talking to this friend for a while about a problem with one of her friends (and this really is a friend's problem and not a pathetic attempt to turn it into a third party story). He seems to think that, while he's in love with her it's easier to live outside of the truth and not be with her because he "needs to find himself" and "focus on his art" because art is what life is all about. Granted they have some obstacles they would have to overcome if they were to be together, but none so insurmountable as his philosophically-induced idiocy. Don't get me wrong. Philosophy is wonderful. I think it's absolutely necessary to question our feelings, existence, actions, motives, surroundings, etc. if we are to grow and learn. However, I also believe that it's necessary to understand that there are just as many answers out there as there are questions. One cannot live their life in ambiguity if they wish to be happy. One cannot search for truth and happiness as a typical guy would search for their shirt scanning the room and consequently deciding that their shirt must have ceased to exist because it's not within eyesight. Have you checked under the bed? In the washer and dryer? In the hamper? Oh! Look! I found it stuffed between the cushions on the sofa! It's there...so don't get lazy. And don't fool yourself into thinking that simplicity and ease can or cannot coexist. It's all situational. And don't complicate your simplicity. Remain calm, logical and objective and that will lead to much more happiness than being a foolish martyr.
